Description
This report investigates the Department of Housing and Public Works' current practices and procedures with regard to its role in identifying and responding to child protection concerns. It is the second report from the Queensland Ombudsman’s investigation into the case of two young people with disability who experienced violence, abuse and neglect during their childhood and early adolescence. The report found that it provides some guidance to help its officers identify and respond to harm but also has recommendations to improve the department's practices and procedures.
Key Recommendations
- Consistent guidance for officers about when to consult supervisors or managers about a child protection concern.
- Child protection training for its officers.
- Guidance for officers on how to identify child protection concerns in information received from contractors.
- Quality assurance processes for monitoring child protection reporting.
- Clearer guidance about recording and reviewing child protection information.
