The Victorian Ombudsman has developed guidelines to assist Victorian public sector bodies in developing policies and procedures for their management of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) in public places.
These guidelines were developed following consultation and enquiries with a range of public sector bodies, including Victorian councils. The enquiries identified a lack of policy or inconsistent policies around the collection, retention, disclosure and disposal of CCTV footage.
These guidelines are aimed at addressing these issues. The purpose of these guidelines is to provide information and a practical framework to consider when developing a policy for a public place CCTV system. These guidelines can be used to evaluate an existing CCTV policy or as an aid to establishing a new CCTV policy.
