This report contains an overview of key observations and concerns arising from the Australian Human Rights Commission’s inspection of the Christmas Island Immigration Detention Centre (CIIDC) in August 2017.

The Australian Human Rights Commission has prepared this report as Australia’s ‘A status’ national human rights institution. It was written by the National Children’s Commissioner (NCC), whose position exists within the Commission.

Workforce planning that includes succession planning is regarded as a core strategic human resource activity. However, the data in this study leads to the conclusion that organisations may not be giving it the attention it deserves.

The ability to work in a safe environment, free from sexual assault or harassment, is a basic human right. The National Inquiry into Workplace Sexual Harassment is looking at the impact of workplace sexual harassment, the drivers of these behaviours, existing good practices being undertaken by employers and the adequacy of the existing legal framework.

The Australian public has rightly demanded to know more about the pervasiveness and impact of workplace sexual harassment and to see concerted action taken to prevent this behaviour from occurring. Government and employers need reliable data to inform their actions and responses to workplace sexual harassment.
