This report examines what the 2016 Australian Census of Population and Housing can tell us about preschool participation among the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian population.

Growth in the Indigenous population between the 2011 and 2016 Censuses was much faster than would be predicted by our best estimates of fertility and mortality.

The Closing the Gap targets feature heavily in the current policy measurement framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians at both the national and state/territory levels. The aim of this paper is to provide helpful information to consider when assessing alternative frameworks for measuring and targeting success.

This paper uses data from the 2006, 2011 and 2016 censuses to analyse the distribution of income within the Indigenous population, and between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations. Particular attention is given to geographic variation in Indigenous income, poverty and inequality.
