Rental affordability snapshot: Southern Queensland 2026


This snapshot highlights the lived experience of those on low incomes in southern Queensland, trying to find a home that is both affordable and appropriate. The findings continue to expose an alarming trend in the private rental market. It found there were no affordable and appropriate rental properties for households on income support with children.

It outlines the deep concerns that the proposal for police to be able to issue an on-the-spot 12-month protection order will not, in many cases, provide additional protections for victim–survivors.

This snapshot report on rental affordability provides findings from 8,646 rental properties surveyed across Southern Queensland. It finds the highest level of rental stress across all household categories is experienced by single people with some categories paying up to 150% of their income on rent.

A submission to the Making Queensland Safer (Adult Crime, Adult Time) Amendment Bill 2025 proposes that changes in the Amendment Bill will not work and still remain incompatible with the human rights of children. Deep concerns are held about the original Bill and the Amendment Bill. The submission does not support the proposed legislation.
