This report highlights significant modern slavery risks faced by temporary migrant workers in agriculture, horticulture and meat processing in rural and regional NSW. The modern slavery risks identified include debt bondage, deceptive recruiting, forced labour and, in extreme cases, servitude, sexual servitude and even human trafficking.

This paper seeks to advance understanding of the vulnerabilities of labour migrants to exploitation and trafficking. This can contribute to improved response capabilities of state agencies and international programmes to address these issues and strengthen protection and support for labour migrants and victims of trafficking in persons.

This guide provides practical advice on how entities can prepare for and respond to the evolving regulatory landscape in Australia and globally.

It is recognised that a combination of legislative, regulatory, cultural, remedial and inter-governmental steps are required to combat modern slavery. Australia's Modern Slavery Act 2018 requires a review to be conducted three years after it commenced (on 1 January 2019). This report outlines the findings from the review.

This is the third report released in a multi-year collaborative project evaluating company responses to Australia's modern slavery reporting regime. It follows earlier reports 'Broken promises' and 'Paper promises'.
