The Census is Australia’s largest data collection exercise and has followed a digital-first approach since 2016. The objective of this audit was to assess the readiness of the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ cyber security arrangements for the 2026 Census. To be ready for the 2026 Census, the ABS must address key remaining cyber security vulnerabilities.

This paper presents the results of the 2025 OECD Digital Government Index (DGI) and the Open, Useful and Re-usable Data Index assessing how governments are structuring, governing and sustaining digital transformation across the public sector. This audit was undertaken to determine whether the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has effective arrangements to support the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). The report found that partly effective arrangements were in place and made seven recommendations relating to AI governance, risk management, evaluation and information management. The ATO agreed to all recommendations.
