This report argues that Australia’s VET system has been fragmented and undermined by years of spending cutbacks and failed experimentation with private delivery models. Australia's recovery in manufacturing could be cut short by inadequate availability of skilled labour.

This research report uses interviews with over 100 domestic and ridehailing platform workers in major U.S. cities to reveal how technology is reshaping the future of labor.

This publication focuses on the proportion of underemployment for part-time workers. It brings in underemployment rates and levels to provide context. It explores personal, household and job variables, to build a picture of who the underemployed people are.

Analysis shows that workers in the gig economy tend to have lower wages than employees. They also often miss out on a number of other benefits. Further, their classification as independent contractors has implications on their tax status and superannuation. This research note examines how these issues are being addressed in a variety of jurisdictions.

Supported by literature and analysis from the Regional Australia Institute (RAI), this policy paper is based on discussions between regional settlement representatives at Migration Nation, a RAI roundtable event held at Old Parliament House on 1 November 2017, as well as consultations with governments and community groups.
