In this research paper, the Tasmania Law Reform Institute (TLRI) has reviewed and updated its 2007 report on human rights in Tasmania, upholding its key recommendations which included the need for a Charter of Rights. The TLRI makes 21 recommendations and urges Tasmania to become the fourth jurisdiction in Australia to adopt human rights legislation.

This report has been written for the purpose of informing the Independent Crime and Corruption Commission Reporting Review. The review was established was following the High Court decision of Crime and Corruption Commission v Carne [2023] HCA 28.

The independent statutory review is being conducted to examine the effectiveness of the Online Safety Act’s regulatory approach. It will determine whether changes are needed to make sure Australia’s online safety laws remain fit-for-purpose. This includes examining issues such as online hate and new harms raised by emerging technologies such as generative artificial intelligence.

The authors of this paper argue that amid a historic inflationary period that has catalysed a cost-of-living crisis, the potential of competition law amendments that can better govern firm behaviour is garnering considerable and consistent attention from federal political parties in Canada.

This policy briefing reflects discussions held at a roundtable of 21 experts from academia and civil society in March 2024, where participants explored the opportunities and challenges of introducing a duty of care into Australia’s Online Safety Act. This briefing paper presents an overview of the discussion.
