Australia’s health system is a major contributor to national greenhouse gas emissions. One way to address this is to consider the environmental impacts of healthcare in health technology assessments (HTA) and decision-making processes. This issues brief provides insights on how integrating environmental impacts into HTAs can contribute to a more environmentally sustainable healthcare system.

Embodied GHG emissions of buildings – the hidden challenge for effective climate change mitigation
To meet climate-change mitigation needs, one must go beyond operational energy consumption and related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of buildings and address their full life cycle. Considering global GHG reduction targets, the results of this study emphasise the urgent need to reduce GHG emissions of buildings by optimising both operational and embodied impacts.

Evaluation of BIM-based LCA results for building design
Various tools that use a Building Information Modelling (BIM) model for automatic quantity take-off as a basis for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) have been developed recently. This paper describes the first application of such a BIM-LCA tool to evaluate the embodied global warming potential (GWP) throughout the whole design process of a real building.
