Aboriginal young people leaving care in New South Wales face serious and enduring challenges as they transition into adulthood. This report examines the current housing landscape for Aboriginal young people exiting care, extended care arrangements and available financial entitlements across Australia, while identifying best practice initiatives within Australia and internationally.

This study presents a comprehensive national investigation into the ageing experiences of people who spent their childhoods in forms of institutional or out-of-home care in Australia. Care Leavers and stakeholders consistently called for trauma-informed care to become the foundation of aged care practice. The report presents eight key policy and practice recommendations.

In recent years, all eight Australian states and territories have introduced forms of extended out-of-home care programs. Yet, major variations remain between these jurisdictions. This paper maps the existing policy developments in each jurisdiction and the level of program supports provided to care leavers aged 18 to 21 years.
