Defence industry and innovation: programs update report 2017

7 May 2018

This document reports on the progress of the Centre for Defence Industry Capability, the Defence Innovation Hub and the Next Generation Technologies Fund. Together these programs represent a $1.6 billion investment in defence capability through growth in Australian defence industry and innovation.

In the first year of operations, all three programs have met major milestones and demonstrated success against the objectives set out in the 2016 Defence industry policy statement.

During the reporting period:

  • CDIC’s adviser network has assisted over 750 businesses. Of the businesses accessing tailored advisory services, 75% were new to doing business with Defence.
  • The Defence Innovation Hub received over 390 innovation proposals and awarded more than $53.5 million in contracts, with 86% of proposals and 85% of investments aligned with Defence’s top three priority capability streams.
  • The Next Generation Technologies Fund has deepened Defence research partnerships across Australia, receiving more than 800 proposals, funding collaborations with more than 40 companies, universities and publicly-funded research organisations, and committing more than $110 million to research programs in the coming years.
