This is the report of a day-long Australia21/FearLess roundtable exploring better ways of preventing the debilitating mental consequences of traumatic stress and improving mental health outcomes for front-line first responder personnel. The project was supported by the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services.
Held in May 2017, the roundtable was chaired by former AFP Commissioner Mick Palmer and brought together 45 representatives from first responder organisations (operational and command-level personnnel), employee associations, support groups, academics, and health care professionals from most States and the two Territories. Some key players from the Australian Defence Force and the Department of Defence were also invited to share their experience in dealing with PTSD. Some of the participants were people who had experienced or were still recovering from PTSD.
The report identifies nine key priorities for consideration by first responder organisations.
