This paper proposes a refreshed policy on New Zealand's strategic relationship with the Pacific. The document includes an outline for developing deeper partnerships with Pacific Island countries; adopting the following principles of engagement; understanding, friendship, mutual benefit, collective ambition and sustainability; seeking to bolster the influence of likeminded partners. The three primary factors for pursuing this engagement strategy are New Zealand's Pacific identity, national security and shared prosperity. Further segmenting the aforementioned issues, the New Zealand Government aims to engage in the Pacific by contributing to issues of governance, human development, climate change and disaster relief, security, economic development and oceans and fisheries.
