The 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission final report: summary

This four-volume report is the culmination of an 18-month inquiry into the causes and circumstances of the fires that devastated parts of Victoria in January and February 2009, killing 173 people.

The Commissioners, the Hon. Bernard Teague AO, Ms Susan Pascoe AM and Mr Ron McLeod AM, have made 67 recommendations which will now be considered by the Victorian Government and others.

The final report was delivered to the Governor of Victoria on the morning of 31 July 2010. The Governor then presented the report to the Premier who tabled it in the Victorian Parliament.  The report is now available to the public. The final report is split into four volumes, plus a summary:

  • Summary
  • Volume I—The Fires and the Fire-Related Deaths
  • Volume II—Fire Preparation, Response and Recovery
  • Volume III—Establishment and Operation of the Commission
  • Volume IV—The Statements of Lay Witnesses.
