Description
The State of Electric Vehicles is an annual report prepared by the Electric Vehicle Council, the national peak body representing the electric vehicle industry in Australia. This report provides data and insights into the electric vehicle industry in Australia and highlights priority areas for further action needed to accelerate the electrification of transport in Australia.
Key findings:
- Sales accelerate rapidly: Despite the lack of national coordination and support, in 2019 electric vehicle sales tripled from 2,216 to 6,718.
- Shifting consumer sentiment: A survey of 2,902 Australians carried out for this report shows consumers continuing to warm towards electric vehicles. Of those surveyed, 56% would now consider purchasing an electric vehicle as their next vehicle, representing a steady increase from 48% in 2018 and 53% in 2019.
- Charging ahead: The rollout of public charging infrastructure has continued apace over the past year on the back of significant investment from the private sector, some state governments, and the federal government through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.
- Battery supply chain potential untapped: Australia continues to waste incredible opportunities when it comes to the battery supply chain. While our mining industry is benefitting from the global electric vehicle boom, Australia is not adding value in mineral processing, battery component manufacturing, and battery recycling.
- Still waiting on government to release handbrake: If governments wish to reduce transport emissions, improve air quality, remove fuel insecurity, and grow local jobs then policy support for electric vehicles must be part of the equation.
