Description

Queensland Labor, led by the incumbent Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, pitched a jobs-led recovery focusing on health and education during the 2020 election campaign. Steven Miles, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Health, consistently attacked the Liberal National Party's track record, claiming they had slashed jobs in healthcare when they last held office.

He claimed the LNP had sacked 4,400 health workers last time it was in power and that Labor had reversed those cuts. RMIT ABC Fact Check investigated: were 4,400 healthcare workers cut, and did Labor reverse these numbers?

While data shows a cut of the magnitude suggested by the Health Minister was made by the LNP, the LNP restored some of that cut itself, with Labor finishing the job when it came to power again. Under Labor's tenure, the rate of health workers in the state has continued to rise year-on-year.

Verdict: Steven Miles's claim is overstated.
