The COVID-19 pandemic has placed and continues to place an unprecedented strain on the healthcare system across Australia. Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) have worked tirelessly to provide primary healthcare throughout the pandemic, displaying great resilience and capability.
Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the strength of the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health (ACCH) sector, it also highlighted and exacerbated pre-existing workforce challenges.
The Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council undertook extensive consultation with ACCH sector between March and December 2022 to gain an understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on workforce.
Throughout this process, the Council has identified that reform is required at both a state and federal level to assist in the development of a strong and stable workforce that is equipped to provide comprehensive primary healthcare in the face of pandemics such as COVID-19, and other challenges that may arise in future.
