Trust in science: clarifying the distinctions between research integrity, research quality, excellence, and impact

Description

If research is to have impact that benefits society, then trust in science is critical.

Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Cathy Foley, is concerned that in debates involving science — especially those focussed on contentious issues — the integrity of the science is sometimes wrongly questioned. To ensure the discussion is focussed where it should be, on quality, Dr Foley has released this paper.

Trust in science outlines the elements of quality science, describes the systems that underpin and support quality science in Australia, and discusses the distinction between 'integrity' and 'quality'.
