Description

The Murdoch Media Inquiry Bill 2023 seeks to establish a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the current state of media diversity and conduct of media outlets operating in Australia, in particular the Murdoch media empire, and their impact on Australian democracy.

This report does not recommend passing the bill, finding that a commission of inquiry would not be the most appropriate mechanism to address the challenges facing Australia's media landscape.

The proposed Media Commission would have the full powers of a Royal Commission and would report back to the Australian Parliament. It would inquire into a range of matters including existing media regulation, the concentration of media ownership and the influence of the media on democracy.

The committee's findings

  • Although the issues impacting Australia's media diversity are evolving rapidly, they are generally clearly identified and well understood.
  • A Commission is not the most appropriate mechanism for addressing the challenges facing Australia's media landscape, especially since a significant range of measures to address the issues have already been initiated.

The Australian Greens' dissenting report

  • Recommends passage of the bill, noting that submitters to the Inquiry were overwhelmingly in favour of the bill being passed.
  • Accuses the Labor party of "taking the side" of the Murdoch Media.
  • Argues "there's no plan to ensure a healthy, diverse media landscape that upholds a strong democracy."
