Description
A trend observed in recent years in some European nations and the US is for many voters to reject the agenda embraced by the neoliberal, globalising 'elite'. A survey conducted in December 2024 explored whether there is any parallel to this trend among Australian voters.
The authors refer to the 'elite' as the people who are behind the successful spread of the neoliberal economic agenda across much of the developed world, including Australia since the 1970s.
The authors conclude that a majority of Australian voters do not support the prevailing neoliberal economic agenda. Nor do they embrace the progressive values and immigration policies often associated with that agenda.
Key results
- Two thirds (67%) favour economic protection for manufacturing, including the use of tariffs.
- Nearly half (47%) support increasing tax rates for high income earners and big business.
- A majority (70%) support government building a large number of homes, both for rent and for sale.
- 74% said they were very or slightly worried about climate change.
- On migration, only 11% said they "want the high numbers to continue".
