Description

People with intellectual disability have poorer health outcomes compared to people without intellectual disability. This population faces multiple barriers to timely and effective health care including limited health workforce capacity in this area, in part due to insufficient and inconsistent intellectual disability health education within Australian pre-registration health profession programs.

This framework aims to equip future health professionals with the required core capabilities to provide quality health care to people with intellectual disability. There is considerable scope for all health disciplines to integrate specific mention of intellectual disability content into existing standards and curricula content. In addition to tailored new content where required, this will ensure that all health graduates are equipped to respond to the individual needs of people with intellectual disability. The integration of intellectual disability curricula can also illustrate how equitable care can be provided for other populations with specific needs.

The framework is accompanied by the following documents:

  • Appendix 2: capacity assessment tools.
  • Intellectual disability health capability framework: easy read.
  • How people with intellectual disability can use the framework: easy read.
