This paper explores the issues surrounding alcohol abuse in light of the NSW government's announcement that an Alcohol Summit is to be held in August 2003. The paper examines the current drinking behaviour of Australians and the costs and benefits associated with the consumption of alcohol. It outlines the size and cost of alcohol-related problems, and outlines the strategies that have been developed to counteract the extent of alcohol-related harm in the community.
