This study examines the media literacy needs of those who are already experiencing disadvantage in society due to various reasons. Among the diverse range of groups that experience disadvantage, researchers focused on the needs of four groups: multicultural communities, people with disability, older people in aged-care, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This report finds that the rapid increase in news consumption by Australians at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has not been maintained. The proportion of people paying for news has not increased, and interest in news has declined since 2020.

It explores how their use and perceptions of news have changed over their lifetime and identifies some of the barriers and opportunities for older Canberrans to staying informed.
