Indigenous incarceration rates in the Northern Territory have shown no improvement since the NT Intervention over a decade ago, this analysis by Monash University’s Castan Centre for Human Rights Law has found.

This research explored the lives of 12 Aboriginal women who were clients of the Kunga Stopping Violence Program (KSVP), and were incarcerated for alleged violent offences in Central Australia. Analysis of their life stories demonstrates the critical need for services that can effectively respond to the trauma of women’s lives and prevent future incarceration.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (NATSILS) presented this report to the United Nations Subcommittee Prevention of Torture informed by experience and knowledge of the treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in places of detention around Australia.

The aim of this research was to identify the needs of Indigenous men and women after release from prison, so that effective community-based throughcare strategies can be developed.

This inquiry examined ways to reduce the number of people flowing through Queensland’s prison system, whilst improving outcomes for the broader community. This final report outlines the Queensland Productivity Commission's findings.
