Progress report: implementation of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety


This report outlines assessment of the progress the Australian Government has made in implementing reforms in response to recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. While passage of the Aged Care Act 2024 has been achieved, there are some areas in which an urgent change in approach is needed.

The study examined the prevalence of and variation in the quality and safety of care provided to older Australians who received subsidised long term care during 2019, by type of care. It found marked national variations. The findings could be used to identify areas of aged care that could be targeted by quality improvement programs.

Homebound individuals residing in community settings with severe health conditions and disabilities could arguably benefit from telehealth interventions. However, the effectiveness of telehealth compared to in-person care remains underexplored. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of telehealth in reducing healthcare utilisation and improving health-related quality of life and wellbeing in homebound populations.

Exploring how transitional aged care supports older people leaving hospital


This examination of the Transition Care Programme (TCP) explores the demographics, health conditions, use patterns and outcomes of individuals who used the services in 2020-21. It shows the effectiveness of targeted interventions helping older people regain independence after leaving hospital, and suggests community-level benefits from delaying or preventing entry into residential aged care.
