The opportunities to flex water heating and electric vehicle charging loads in the ACT
This research focuses on the opportunity to better utilise existing network infrastructure and reduce energy costs for Australian Capital Territory residents. It finds that significant population growth to 2045 and electrification can be accommodated within existing capacity if electric vehicle charging and water heating occurs in times of otherwise low electricity demand.

Off-peak hot water in the 21st century: smarter load shifting in the NEM
In 2023, approximately 4,000 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy—around 9.3% of utility scale renewable generation — was wasted, or “curtailed”. Much of this energy could be directed to off-peak hot water systems if those systems’ timing could be changed from overnight to daytime peaks. Such a change could provide flexible demand for renewable energy, delivering financial...

A policy plan for decarbonising homes
Reducing carbon emissions from homes is a crucial step in reaching net zero. This report sets out an outline policy plan for decarbonising the UK’s home heating.

Admittance/Fourier series revisited: understanding periodic heat flows
Thermal modelling of buildings typically involves the use of software programs that are highly accurate but complex. As such many users do not have a good “feel” for how heat flows in and out of a building. The simplest type of manual calculation method is a steady state model which allows some insight into the...

The life cycle cost of standalone solar air-water heat pumps for Australian homes
To combat increasing electricity prices due to the high operating costs of conventional reverse cycle air-airheat pumps (RC-AA-HP), they can be powered by standalone PV systems as a radical demand side energy management solution. However, the heavy power consumption of their compressors necessitates very large and expensive standalone hotovoltaic (PV) systems. Alternatively, reversible air-water heat...
