In an attempt to move towards a more renewable energy system, the New Zealand government has released this green paper, which lays out the role hydrogen could play in New Zealand’s economy, and what could possibly be done to accelerate its use.

The National Electricity Market (NEM) has remained relatively unchanged since the market started in the late 1990s. Since then, the mix of generation technologies, patterns of energy use and government energy policies have changed significantly. This issues paper has been released as a first step in reforming the NEM to meet Australia's future energy needs.

This report addresses the challenges that distribution network service providers, regulators, governments and policy makers will face as Australia makes the transition to a distributed energy resources future.

This issue contains some new graphs that show the nation's energy transition over the more than twenty years since the National Electricity Market was launched, in December 1998. In addition, this report has a particular focus on South Australia, where the transition is most advanced.

There are plenty of arguments for states pursuing their own renewable energy targets, not least because they can fill the policy vacuum left at the national level.
