In 2021-22, across Australia over 174,600 households had applied to live in social housing, but only 29,100 households—usually those with complex or acute needs—were offered a home. This research investigates how policymakers and housing providers can use other forms of housing assistance to support people who are otherwise eligible for social housing.

The report assesses housing affordability in Australia across tenure, age and income groups, and focuses in detail on cohorts of vulnerable people.

New South Wales (NSW) housing crisis is the most pressing public policy challenge facing the state. This report argues that a well-funded social housing system in NSW is crucial for addressing the housing crisis, promoting economic resilience and fostering inclusive communities.
