A submission to the Making Queensland Safer (Adult Crime, Adult Time) Amendment Bill 2025 proposes that changes in the Amendment Bill will not work and still remain incompatible with the human rights of children. Deep concerns are held about the original Bill and the Amendment Bill. The submission does not support the proposed legislation.

Across Australia, governments are incarcerating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children at disproportionately high rates compared to non-Indigenous children. This racial discrimination complaint, made to the United Nations, highlights Australia's' discriminatory youth justice systems and how they seriously violate the human rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

This open letter opposes the suite of Victorian Parliament bail law changes, arguing they will lead to greater criminalisation of Aboriginal and other marginalised communities. It recommends the Victorian Government pauses the reforms and strengthens therapeutic bail supports.

This interim report summarises evidence and identifies key issues from an inquiry into Australia’s youth justice and incarceration system. Evidence highlighted that Australia’s youth justice system is in crisis and vulnerable children and young people are being held in detention without adequate and appropriate supports. The report makes two recommendations.

The Commissioner is calling for reforms to be made to South Australia’s child justice system to align it with a child rights-based approach. There are significant opportunities for the South Australian Government to reform the child justice and related systems in line with international human rights standards.
