This report sets out a framework for government to address Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), reducing the distress and risk of suicide they engender. The findings show the importance of addressing trauma early and consistently throughout a person’s life. The report sets out eight guiding principles and 33 recommendations for governments, policymakers and services.

Suicidal thoughts and behaviours in adolescence
This snapshot discusses suicidal thoughts and behaviours in adolescence. It finds around one-third of Australian teenagers have experienced suicidal thoughts and behaviours in the last 12 months. The findings support the need for suicide prevention efforts to consider individual risk factors and key social determinants of suicidal thoughts and behaviours for young people.

Social media: the root cause of rising youth self‐harm or a convenient scapegoat?
This paper explores the parallel rise in social media use and youth mental health problems. It argues that increased social media use may be a correlate, exacerbating factor, or a consequence of rising trends in youth self‐harm, which may have entirely separate causes. This complexity highlights the need for a considered approach.

This research shows that TikTok has maximised the addictive qualities of design choices and engagement strategies employed by competing social media companies, incentivising a race to the bottom between a small number of leading social media companies vying for the highest user numbers and engagement rates.
