This report supports the National Competition Policy process by analysing the economic effects of two policy reforms: occupational licensing reform to promote labour mobility and adopting international and overseas standards. These two reforms would promote competition and increase Australia’s GDP.

This research report examined whether attending an Australian non-government secondary school gives an advantage in choice of career in later life. The study examined the occupations held in 2021 by the sex of the person and the sector of secondary school (Government run, Catholic, other Independent) attended in 2011.

Education and training choices, skills, outcomes and pathways – like jobs, work and pay – are highly gendered in Australia. This report provides insights on these education and training divides. It shows that gendered patterns in education and training remain deeply entrenched, with little sign of change that could shift Australia’s occupational gender segregation.

This data portal enables exploration of the latest trends and insights into Australia’s job market by occupation (which categorises workers by the job they do) and industry (which categorises workers based on the industry that that work in). The data is broken down into a number of categories and both datasets are searchable.

This report makes the case for a sustained commitment to better regulation and harmonisation across Australia. It recommends a new seamless national economy agreement between the Federal Government and states and territories, identifying nine priority areas for reform and key steps to ensure success.
