This paper critically reviews current approaches to co-designing and faux-designing (tokenistic or superficial co-design practices) health policy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It overviews key concepts, principles and benefits of co-design; highlights concerns with contemporary practices; and outlines critical issues to address. Case studies are included to illustrate aspects of best practice.

Social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) is a holistic understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s health that centres a collective sense of self. A project to research and collate SEWB measures has resulted in this report, which explores practical assessment tools for SEWB.

This review is the first time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have led a national assessment of how the National Agreement on Closing the Gap is working on the ground. It puts their perspectives, experiences and solutions front and centre. The review sets out 12 key findings and 17 recommendations.
