In 1987, the Law Reform Commission of Victoria (predecessor organisation of the Victorian Law Reform Commission) published a landmark guide to legal language, titled Plain English and the Law.

Although it is often cited as an important work, this publication has been hard to find online. In 2017, the Commission republished the report, with original contents but in a new format, and a new preface by the current Chair of the Commission, the Hon. Philip Cummins AM.
