CSIRO's search for better Australian cotton varieties emphasises the importance of best practice management along the whole production line -- from grower to consumer.

This article examines the current state of Australia’s cotton industry.

Australia is the fifth largest exporter of cotton in the world and 98 per cent of Australian cotton is exported to South-east Asia where it is valued for its high inherent fibre characteristics and low contamination rates.

During the past decade the adoption of genetically modified (GM) cotton varieties has led to an 80 per cent decrease in pesticide use.

Industry research and development focuses on ensuring high yields of consistent quality.

There are more than 800 cotton farmers in Australia and cotton is the economic and social lifeblood of more than 50 rural communities, providing jobs for 10,000 Australians. It also directly supports more than 4,000 businesses.
