This is a report analysing the gender ratio of counsel appearing in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of New Zealand. Data establishing the gender of all counsel appearing in those courts was obtained from judgements issued in the years of 2012-2017, and analysed. This report summaries and provides that data. It is hoped that this data will stimulate reflection and action addressing how and why women are under-represented in the higher courts compared to their proportionate presence in the legal profession, and how barriers contributing to that position might be addressed.
