Student wellbeing and student learning outcomes are inextricably linked as students can only reach their full educational potential when they are happy, healthy and safe, and when there is a positive school culture to engage and support them in their learning.
The Effective Schools are Engaging Schools: Student Engagement Policy Guidelines support the rights and articulates the expectations of every member of the school community to engage in and promote a safe and inclusive educational environment. All Victorian government schools are required to develop a Student Engagement Policy and this requirement will be listed on the School Compliance Checklist from 2010. The policy should cover the following components:
school profile statement
whole-school prevention statement
rights and responsibilities
shared expectations
principals, teachers and student support staff
students
parents/carers
school actions/consequences.
