Unpaid carers in Australia, comprising family members, friends, or community members, provide essential care to individuals within existing relationships. This form of caregiving extends to 3.0 million Australians (ABS, 2022) who support those with disabilities, mental health challenges, medical and age-related conditions. Their role is integral to sustaining the viability of the care and support economy.
Over the past six months, the Australian Government has been hearing from carers across the country about what is important to them, including what supports and services they need to participate fully in society and fulfil their caring roles. This draft strategy invites feedback from carers, the people they care for, relevant organisations and members of the Australian public who wish to comment on key elements of the National Carer Strategy.
The focus for this consultation is the Strategy's vision, principles, objectives and priority outcome areas.
The consultation period closes on 3 November 2024.
