The strategy highlights the social and economic contributions of Australia's 3 million informal and unpaid carers, emphasising their need for greater recognition, support, and empowerment. It provides a framework for co-designing, developing and delivering actions to improve the lives of carers. Next steps for the Strategy are laid out in the accompanying Action Plan 2024-2027.
The strategy was developed in response to the growing recognition of the challenges faced by unpaid carers in Australia, particularly given the increasing demand for care as the population ages. It was co-designed with carers and incorporates insights gathered through consultations and evidence from various sources, including the recent Parliamentary Inquiry into the recognition of unpaid carers. It seeks to address key issues such as the lack of awareness and understanding of caring roles, difficulties in accessing support services, and the impact of caring on carers' own well-being and financial security.
The strategy outlines priority areas for government action, focusing on:
- raising community awareness,
- improving access to services,
- enhancing skills development,
- supporting workforce participation, and
- safeguarding the well-being of carers.
The strategy is accompanied by an Auslan version of the highlights, Easy read version and action plan.
