Description

The strategy outlines the actions the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water will take to progress reconciliation within the organisation. Its five key outcomes seek to incorporate the expertise of First Nations people into the department's policy, program and regulatory work while creating a culturally supportive environment for First Nations staff.

The strategy is structured around an initial foundations stage (2025-2026) followed by an embedding stage (2026-2030). It is structured around five outcomes, each linked to priority reforms from the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. The outcomes are:

  1. Elevate First Nations matters to the centre of decision-making structures and business planning.
  2. Engage early and genuinely with First Nations people and communities. Communicate consistently and facilitate First Nations participation.
  3. First Nations cultural capability is a core skill for staff, embedded and recognised in performance and employment systems. Program and policy designs reflect strong understanding and respect of First Nations cultures.
  4. Make the Department a culturally safe and supportive workplace where First Nations people want to work.
  5. Harness opportunities for meaningful economic participation for First Nations businesses, people and communities.
