Description

The strategy sets out a new vision for Australia’s sports diplomacy. It positions the nation to take advantage of the opportunities presented by increased international interest in Australian sporting excellence, while also managing the challenges that Australian sporting organisations increasingly face around the world. It contains nine actions.

The strategy is key to delivering the Sport horizon: national sport strategy 2024-2034, which includes international engagement as one of its six priorities. It connects Australia’s current sports diplomacy priorities to established Pacific programs: PacificAus Sports, which develops high-performance pathways for Pacific athletes, coaches and administrators; and Team Up, the sport for development program in the Pacific.

Actions

  1. Identify opportunities to build international relationships through sport.
  2. Strengthen collaboration with the sport sector around major sporting events.
  3. Assist the sport sector in navigating the changing global operating environment.
  4. Leverage major sporting events to promote the full story of Australia.
  5. Use a twin-track approach to gender equality and disability equity.
  6. Provide opportunities for people in the Pacific and Australia to develop skills together.
  7. Improve the lives of people and communities in the Pacific through the Team Up program.
  8. Maximise the trade, tourism and investment opportunities in sport.
  9. Lead efforts to build global capability to address sport integrity threats.
