The costs of living with disability in Australia
This paper outlines the evidence gaps on poverty and disability in Australia, and discusses the evidence base and explore some of the different methods used to understand the relevant issues both in Australia and internationally. It discusses both monetary measures and more implicit ‘standard of living’ approaches that attempt to estimate the extra costs of disability.
This paper seeks to show how multidimensional measures have been used in understanding poverty and disability worldwide, and discusses how factors such as the design and delivery of support services, housing, employment and education are all implicated in the current and future drivers of poverty among people with disability in Australia.
It concludes by emphasising the need to include people with disability in the design and oversight of multidimensional measures.
