Description
This article looked at adapting experience‐based co‐design (EBCD) through co‐production by involving people with lived experience of disability as co‐researchers to work on a community cycling program (CycLink). This paper reports the co‐produced protocol and reflects on co‐researchers' contributions.
The study was co-produced alongside three co-researchers with lived experience of disability. They changed the EBCD method so it would work better for people with disabilities using creative online activities. Lots of little changes were made based on their experiences and what people with disabilities told the researchers. For future EBCD projects it is recommended to include co-researchers from start to finish.
Key findings
- Co-researchers’ knowledge of disability and cycling influenced the accessibility and relevance of research materials.
- Adaptations enabled us to invite young people with complex communication needs and intellectual disability to EBCD.
- Embedded evaluations may offer insights on the quality and mechanisms of EBCD engagement, enhancing future co-design.
