Evaluation
Description

This evaluation assesses the Murray-Darling Water and Environment Research Program's (Program) effectiveness and impact in meeting its strategic objectives, contributing to water reform, and enhancing Australia’s capacity to manage the Basin under changing conditions. The evaluation applied a range of evidence collection methods and makes 7 recommendations.

The evaluation found the program delivered high-value, policy-relevant research that improves the capacity to manage water resources in the Murray–Darling Basin. It has laid the foundation for a more enduring, integrated research ecosystem. It recommends that continued investment in adoption, integration and long-term funding will be essential to realising the full benefits of the Program and supporting future Basin management challenges.

The program was set up in response to the 2018-19 lower Darling (Baaka) fish deaths, and in the subsequent independent review, the Australian Government announced a $20 million fund to improve scientific knowledge of the Basin in 2019 which established the Program.

Recommendations

  1. Streamline governance and approval processes.
  2. Promote cross-theme integration and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  3. Broaden and improve end-user engagement.
  4. Enhance engagement and adoption pathways.
  5. Invest in capacity building for qualitative and cultural data use.
  6. Ensuring impact and legacy.
  7. Secure enduring funding mechanisms.
