“It’s going to be huge”: family member experiences of the transition into individualised housing for people with disability

Supported accommodation Housing for people with disability National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Caregivers Neurodiversity People with disability Families Australia
Description

This study explores how family members experienced supporting a person with disability as they moved from group homes, aged care, or family homes into individualised specialist disability accommodation (SDA). Interviews with family members revealed two major themes: a care transition, involving shifts in practical and emotional caregiving roles, and a relational transition, reflecting changes in family dynamics during the move.

While SDA offers benefits and greater independence, the transition also brought stress and adjustment challenges. The findings highlight the need for thoughtful planning, support for families, and guidance to help people with disability manage support teams and navigate the shift toward more independent living.
