Description

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and communities are increasingly exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in a range of contexts.

AI technologies are already being integrated into health systems, service delivery models and administrative processes. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations to realise the benefits of these technologies, while safeguarding against potential harms, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, perspectives and Indigenous Knowledge Systems need to be embedded throughout the AI lifecycle. This includes ensuring that AI development and implementation are guided by principles of self-determination, cultural safety, Indigenous Data Sovereignty and community control, so that AI contributes to stronger, more equitable, and culturally responsive health systems rather than reinforcing existing disparities.

This scoping and policy review builds on the work of Artificial intelligence for healthcare in Australian Indigenous communities. This paper will form the basis of ongoing discussion and collaboration with key stakeholders across the community controlled and digital health sectors, to co-design priorities for policy recommendations to the Australian Government.
