What makes a good national flag?

That's the question the Flag Consideration Panel in New Zealand is currently trying to answer, as the country edges closer to settling on a new national emblem.

A panel of culture, history, art and design experts are considering alternative designs to replace the current flag, which features the British Union Jack.

And after receiving more than 10,000 submissions, the panel has now compiled a list of 40 potential designs -- but only four of them will be put to a referendum later this year.
