Abstract: This paper comprises an analysis of sustainability education policies and approaches. The aim is to identify a pathway through the education milieu to social capital acquisition for transition towards sustainability in the suburbs. There are three main points. Firstly, schools need a cultural base of transformative learning and to model sustainability practice in order to support sustainability transition in cities. Secondly, education systems need to reflect the sustainability imperative, even though this has recently become intensely problematic in Australia. Thirdly, as a result of the analysis the paper concludes with a call for a reorientation of the National Curriculum to sustainability.
