"One good tree can host a thousand birds": The myth of national unity and prospects for a national reconciliation process in Burma

Description
Toe Zaw Latt argues that much work needs to be done to lay foundations for a genuine national reconciliation process in Burma. This process must involve, enfranchise and be meaningful for all ethnic groups - Burmans and non-Burmans alike. An important first step must be taken by the Burmans firstly, in recognising the failings of Burmese nationalism since independence, and secondly, in acknowledging the failings of current approaches to understanding Burma's problems - a western liberal democracy, for example, will not magically deliver Burma from the evils of its pre-colonial ways, nor end the legacy of its colonial divides. Finally, genuine cross-cultural dialogue must be undertaken across the wider Burmese community.
