In November 2022, the Victorian Ombudsman began an ‘own motion’ investigation into healthcare provision for Aboriginal people in Victorian prisons. This report outlines the findings.

In 2022–23, there were 110 deaths in custody: 70 in prison custody and 40 in police custody or custody-related operations. In total, there were 31 Indigenous deaths and 79 non-Indigenous deaths in custody.

The Australian Government is looking for new ways to support First Nations people who have been incarcerated to connect with employment services and assist them to move into work. This discussion paper and consultation guide have been released to assist people in providing feedback.
